Alsarah & The Nubatones
East-African Retro Pop Soul
“Alsarah, the new star of Nubian pop” – The Guardian
“Her voice evokes the aura of a Sudanese queen. Her music speaks of immigration, by choice or by force, and goes from electronic to Nubian inspired 70s pop music, to North African Arabic music” – Libération
“Creating something fresh yet timeless and imbued with a sense of nostalgia, ‘Silt’ is an excellent album that perfectly captures the essence of what Alsarah describes as ‘East African retro pop” – Songlines
Alsarah & The Nubatones effortlessly combine the contemporary with the traditional to create an infectious take on East-African retro pop full of rhythmic soul.
Alsarah & The Nubatones were born out of a shared love for Nubian ‘Songs of Return’, modern migration patters and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. Inspired by both the golden age of Sudanese pop music of the 70s and the sound of effervescent New-York, Alsarah & The Nubatones build a repertoire where an exhilarating Oud plays electric melodies layered on top of beautiful Jazz-Soul bass lines, and sharp and modern percussion breathe new life to age-old rhythms. Having just released new record Manara on Wonderwheel Records that explores the many emotions and themes that mark the long journey after immigration begins – their live set is a musical journey across diaspora and migration through an urban lens.
Since their first show in 2011, the group has performed at acclaimed international festivals and prestigious venues across the globe, with audiences varying in age and ethnicity, they have proved over and over that soul crosses all cultural and linguistic barriers.
