Wormfood presents: Nubiyan Twist / J-Felix (Tru Thoughts) / Grand Wa Zoo / The Rhythm Social Club
For this return visit to the impeccable Passing Clouds, we salute their unstoppable, love-filled, forward-thinking party spirit by bringing a line-up that is sure to shake the place to the rafters with every bit of musical brilliance we have to offer. 12-piece future hip hop, soul, dub + afrobeat collective Nubiyan Twist head things up, with one of our favourite beatmakers J-Felix (Tru Thoughts) and North London hip-hop / soul powerhouse Grand Wa Zoo making this a truly tantalising party proposition. More acts to follow.
Spreading the love across the UK with their monumental fusion of soul, jazz, dub, hip hop and afrobeat, 12-piece outfit Nubiyan Twist are fresh from releasing their eponymous debut LP, with huge critical acclaim. Released 30th March on Wormfood Records, the album will likely appeal to fans of Jill Scott, Fela Kuti, The Heliocentrics and Common. A culmination of brilliant musicians, DJs and producers, fuelled by the laidback, soulful delivery of female vocalist Nubiya Brandon, ‘Nubiyan Twist’ fuses groove-driven music from around the world with soundsystem culture and jazz-inspired improvisation. Encouraging artistic and social unity between different cultures and musical styles, notable influences include the likes of Fela Kuti, King Tubby, J Dilla, Herbie Hancock and Nat King Cole.
Producer and multi-instrumentalist Joe F Newman released his debut album as J-Felix, ‘101 Reasons’, on Tru Thoughts in June 2015. Now based in Brighton, but originally from Bristol, Newman’s approach to music was originally inspired by those he saw taking the DIY route back home where he grew up on a diet of d ‘n’ b, hip hop and dubwise music. After discovering the original sources of so many of the samples found in early d ‘n’ b, trip hop and US hip hop, he fell in love with all things funk, jazz and soul, later developing a particular taste for the P-funk and boogie sounds which now come through heavily in his music.
Taking their inspiration from 90s hip-hop, with a three pronged vocal attack from lyrical tag team Jay, Ryo and the brilliant Lili Caseley bringing the sweet stuff, Grand Wa Zoo are quite simply the most on point hip-hop crew in the current surge of quality seeping out of the capital, fusing old school and new school culture into some irresistbly satisfying new sounds.
